Bespoke 2-day training

This 2 day accessibility training course offers a comprehensive understanding of best practices and provides an in-depth review of your organisation’s accessibility.

We’ll work together to decide which topics you’d like to include. And I’ll use your documents, content, website and so on to fully tailor the training content to your organisation.

This course also gives a brief introduction to assistive technologies and accessibility tools.

Training outline

I’ll set up a 1-hour session to explore your needs and which topics you’d like to include in the training. We’ll talk about:

  • which teams will be joining and the type of job roles
  • any accessibility experience trainees have
  • which content types and document formats you want to focus on. For example, webpages, Office documents, marketing assets, and PDFs
  • what equipment and software trainees can access

I’ll also ask you to send me content and examples of your work that you’d like reviewed and included in the training. This might be documents, website pages or social content.

The first day is focused on introducing your team to disability and accessibility.

Best practice guidance will use examples from your organisation to show the do’s and don’ts in practice. This helps everyone understand accessibility in relation to your work.

As standard, I’ll start the day with:

  • the social model of disability through lived experience
  • how many disabled people are in the UK and the cost of losing disabled customers
  • why accessibility is legally important to your organisation
  • the 4 core principles of accessibility
  • why researching and testing with disabled people is important

The rest of the day’s content will depend on what topics you want to include from the discovery session. These could be:

  • plain English and readability
  • headings and structure
  • colour contrast and colour blindness
  • fonts and text formatting
  • links
  • PDFs and alternative document formats
  • images and alt-text
  • graphs and charts
  • video
  • newsletters
  • social media
  • presentations and events
  • workplace accessibility and adjustments

Day 2 is more practical. It has lots of exercises to practise the things you’ve learned on day 1.

The first part of the day will likely involve editing your organisation’s content. There can also be exercises on how to make your documents more accessible.

These are based on any materials you’ve sent me after the discovery session. The exercises will of course depend on the topics you’ve chosen to cover in day 1.

The second part of the day looks at assistive technology and accessibility tools. I’ll give a brief overview of some of the things you can use to support your work and how some technology works.

This isn’t comprehensive technical testing but it’s a good introduction. It can help raise awareness of the things that need review, as well as understanding some of the technologies disabled people use, and barriers they experience.

I like to end day 2 with a discussion on what you’re going to do after the training. This includes things like:

  • a plan for accessibility fixes or priority changes
  • ideas for creating accessibility guidance for colleagues
  • updates to ways of working
  • changes to policies or brand guidelines

Capacity and format

I offer a 30-minute follow up call for any attendees with questions on the training content. These are for clarification or accessibility, they’re not additional training time or consultation.

Accessibility

I can offer discounts for charities, concessions, and repeat clients. You can ask about these when you get in contact.
